Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

Loyola Medicine is a major referral center for cardiac surgery as well as for heart and lung transplantation.  More than 700 open-heart procedures are performed annually, and the Division provides anesthesia for >1000 cases per year.  Case types include valve procedures, aortic surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting, heart and lung transplantation, VAD implantation, ECMO, and major thoracic surgery.  In addition, Loyola Medicine performs minimally-invasive and transcatheter procedures that structural heart interventions, for which we are part of the TEE imaging team.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology is comprised of a diverse group of fellowship-trained anesthesiologists who are board-certified in adult cardiac anesthesiology and advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.  The cardiac anesthesiologists practice alongside cardiac surgeons and cardiologists to provide high-caliber clinical care while also contributing to research and education.

The Division is also home to two fellows who are a part of an ACGME-Accredited Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Program.  Medical students, residents, and fellows are integrated into the heart team model essential to comprehensive cardiac care.  They have the opportunity to work with the intensive care team, the perfusionists, and the blood bank.
