| Description: |
Strokes are the leading cause of severe neurological disability in adults, with approximately 85% of strokes being ischemic in nature, causing cerebral infarction. Approximately 30% of all ischemic strokes are caused by a cardioembolism, about 20% from large artery atherosclerotic disease, 20% are small subcortical “lacunar” infarcts, and 30% have undetermined cause and are labeled cryptogenic. The course will consist of formal tutorials by stroke physicians, didactic conferences, and assigned readings from stroke guidelines (ischemic strokes, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, etc.) and pertinent cerebrovascular chapters from the 6th Edition of Practical Neurology (J. Biller, Editor, Wolters Kluwer 2027). The student will have an opportunity to see a broad spectrum of stroke patients in hospital, emergency department, as well as outpatient evaluation of new and return stroke patients.
Objectives: Provide the student an exposure to diagnosis, evaluation, and management of common and complex stroke scenarios and mastering of the most relevant stroke syndromes.
Expose the student to pertinent testing modern modalities in stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic).
Provide a knowledge base regarding basic science aspects of cerebral ischemia, structured readings, and one-on-one seminars. |
| Method of Evaluation: | Student Summative Evaluation 50%; Paper and presentation on a related topic 50%. |
