You want to make sure you are looking for an academic internship at the right time to secure a space in your internship course. Although department deadlines may vary, below is a general timeframe to give you an idea of when to begin your search.

April: Fall Registration Begins
April–August: Secure Fall Academic Internship
Late August: Fall Semester Begins
November: Spring Registration Begins
November–January: Secure Spring Academic Internship
January: Spring Semester Begins
February: Summer Registration Begins
February–May: Secure Summer Academic Internship
June: Summer Session Begins

Another way to look at it - You'll want to give yourself at least 6 months from considering to enroll in an academic internship course to secure your internship and confirm your enrollment permissions. If you are seeking a competitive internship role, give yourself between 9-12 months, as many companies and organizations post competitive roles up to one year in advance. The more time you can give yourself, the better!
