Cardiomyocyte translational control and remodeling


The heart grows in response to stress to match physiological demand through the hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocytes grow directionally in width or length depending on the stimulus, and excessive growth in either direction can lead to cardiovascular disease. The Uchida lab is interested in the specific molecular pathways that drive these distinct forms of growth. We use high-resolution microscopy of primary isolated cardiomyocytes, mouse models, and living myocardial tissues to examine the molecular pathways that control local protein synthesis and directional growth.
