Internships with Impact: Katarina Meier

Katarina Meier presenting internship project at IAI 2022

FRSC Student Katarina Meier presenting her internship project at IAI 2022 with Professor James Snaidauf.

Katarina Maier (Class of 2023) obtained an internship at  (CSAFE) in Ames, IA during summer 2022.  Her internship project was successful enough to warrant a poster presentation at the 106th IAI Annual Educational Conference!  The IAI, or  is one of the oldest forensic science professional organizations in the world. The title of Katarina's internship project is 'Analyzing Weight's Effect on Shoe Prints with Computer Vision'. Her abstract of her work can be found below.

Abstract: Footwear impressions can be affected by a wearer’s weight. This study aims to quantify the deformation of shoe prints at various weights and estimate weight based on the deformation. We created 180 outsole impressions using the BVDA inkless shoe print system with 20 shoes at eight different weights, with exemplars. We align the scanned outsole images using SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform) and RANSAC (random sample consensus) algorithms and statistically analyze the effect of weight.
