Divine Pop and Techno Slop: Theological Discourses on Social Media
September 10, 2026
1:30 PM - 9:30 PM Central
Damen Den, Lake Shore Campus
One “dry run” for the “Age of AI” in which we now find ourselves is found in our experiences with social media—particularly as a venue for debating the high ideas of politics, religion, and culture. The results of these debates on this new medium are mixed, trending decidedly towards the negative side of the ledger. This focused colloquium will reflect on the state of "God talk" on social media and features authors of the recent book, Theological Discourses on Social Media. Our speakers will consider how particular media platforms amplify the objectives of a given form of social media (Twitter/X, Snapchat, online gaming venues) and probe the implications for conversations on theology and religion–and for humane dialogue. All are welcome to join in this day-long, bricks and mortar event–and the heavy hors d'oeuvres reception that precedes the evening keynote.
